Rubén recently joined the Nousmedis team, but he’s already proven to be resourceful, curious, and eager to learn. With a background that combines design and programming, and a healthy dose of empathy and efficiency, he’s training as a data analyst while taking his first steps in real-life projects. A lover of judo, cooking, and epic stories, Rubén tells us in this interview about his early days on the Nousmedis team, what skills he wants to continue developing, and what excites him about the future of catalog automation. Read on to learn more!
Do you have a morning routine or habit that prepares you for the workday?
I tend to wake up five minutes before my alarm goes off. I’m not sure why, but it’s like my mind is already programmed for it. That way, I have no excuse to stay in bed for five more minutes, haha. I get up, take a shower, and make myself a Cola Cao to start the day with energy. Then I tidy up the dishes from the night before and do a quick clean of the kitchen. Finally, I head out to the office.
What is your role at Nousmedis?
Right now, although I’ve only recently joined and I’m still completing my training, I’m working as a data analyst and programmer.
What three professional skills or qualities do you think are most valued at Nousmedis?
Patience is key to staying calm and understanding that even when something is hard, perseverance and time will make it work out. A strong desire to learn is essential, especially when starting in a new environment. Lastly, empathy and the ability to adapt to clients’ needs are crucial, always while setting clear boundaries that work for both sides.
What is your secret superpower at work?
I’ve always considered myself a practical and efficient person. I like to tackle problems with a solution-oriented mindset, always aiming for the best result in the shortest time possible, without compromising neither quality nor attention to detail.
What is one of the projects you have enjoyed the most in the company and why?
I haven’t had the chance to fully complete any projects yet, but I’m currently working on my first one: the catalog for Araven, a company that sells kitchen utensils. Coincidentally, cooking is one of my hobbies, so I’m sure I’ll really enjoy the process!
What do you think the future of catalog automation will look like?
It’s hard to predict. Technology is advancing fast, and artificial intelligence can now do tasks quickly and even find viable (albeit not always perfect) solutions. Still, I believe there will always be a human element involved in catalog automation, whether it’s in design, supervision, or final composition.
Can you share a recent accomplishment, either personal or professional, of which you are particularly proud?
Recently, my primary school judo students (3rd and 4th grade) became Barcelona team champions for the first time. I’m very proud of them because they applied everything my team and I have taught them throughout the year. Their perseverance, attitude, and effort paid off, especially after they narrowly missed the gold last year.
Tell us a funny anecdote you have experienced at Nousmedis or a favorite moment.
I don’t have many anecdotes yet! But if there’s one thing I already really enjoy, it’s Fridays, when the entire team meets up in the office. There are always stories from the day and lots of laughs. Plus, Elena usually brings some homemade treat. I must say, in the time I’ve been here, there’s been some sweet treat almost every Friday… and we’re not complaining! 😊
If you could swap roles with anyone on the team for a day, who would you choose and why?
Probably Jan. I admire how calmly he handles projects and how clearly he understands what each person needs. I’d love to one day master programming the way he does.
If you could learn a new professional skill instantly, what would it be?
Completely master programming. I come from a design background, which is already familiar to me, but I’d like to fully integrate the technical side of things into my background.
When you are not working, we can find you…
If I’m not teaching a judo class, I’m probably training with my teammates at the club throwing ippons, that, or dancing bachata with my partner.
What is the best advice you have ever been given and who gave it to you?
“If today doesn’t work out, don’t worry… another opportunity will come. What matters is that you keep trying.” That advice came from my mother, and it’s helped me through uncertain times. It reminds me that patience and perseverance are key. Sometimes you just have to trust that good things are on their way, even if you can’t see them yet.
Recommend a book, podcast, series or movie you’ve been obsessed with lately.
A book I’d recommend is Tierra by Eloy Moreno. It hooked me from the start with its constant suspense and had a surprising ending.
As for podcasts, I really enjoy Black Mango, which talks about historical and mythological events in a fun, engaging way, and Territorio Revival, which dives into ‘90s millennial movies and shows, it always brings me back to my childhood.
As for series, I’m a big fantasy fan, so Game of Thrones had me totally captivated.
Which catalog would you like to automate?
Honestly, any catalog is welcome. But I’d love the day I come across a catalog out in the world and can say, “I built that one!” There’s something special about seeing your work materialized in something tangible and accessible.
Do you think that the days of printed publications are numbered?
Not at all. It’s true that technology has pushed digital content forward, and we consume more and more on screens, but I think print still has a lot of value. Just like with books, there’s something special about holding paper, flipping through a magazine or catalog. That sensory experience can’t be easily replaced. I believe both formats will continue to coexist for quite some time.
Although he’s just getting started at Nousmedis, Rubén has already earned a place in the team thanks to his positive attitude, willingness to learn, and ability to contribute from day one. With a rare combination of creativity, technical skills, and discipline (shaped both in design and on the tatami) he’s on track to keep growing and adding value to every project. We’re thrilled to have him with us and excited to be part of this new chapter. Welcome, Rubén!
